Firm Profile: HOLLAND & BONZAGNI, P.C. is a full-service Intellectual Property ("IP") law firm, based in Longmeadow, MA, just south of Springfield. The firm was founded by Donald Holland in 1981. HOLLAND & BONZAGNI deals exclusively with patents, trademarks, copyrights, trade secrets, computer law, cyber law, and related matters, such as joint ventures, technology transfers, licensing and litigation. The firm's primary goal is to help bring its clients' products and services to market and to prevent them from being stolen. It achieves this goal by combining an uncompromising attitude with an aggressive approach, while at the same time, striving to be cost-efficient. HOLLAND & BONAZAGNI now protects and licenses its clients' products and services in over 50 countries. HOLLAND & BONZAGNI's clients are generally industrial corporations, both domestic and foreign. They include well-known manufacturers of aircraft, food, paper products, golf equipment, hand tools, medical equipment, computer software, chemicals, electronic components and other high-tech items. Plus, the firm services chains of restaurants, hospitals, and other businesses to protect their products and reputations. About 25 percent of the firm's work is stopping counterfeiters or unauthorized copiers. HOLLAND & BONZAGNI is one of the recognized pioneers in computer litigation (see, e.g., Manufacturers Technologies, Inc. v. CAMS, Inc., 706 F.Supp. 984 (D.Conn. 1989), which was relied on by the Second Circuit Courts of Appeals in defining a test for determining software infringement under copyright law). The firm is also recognized for trademark innovation and litigation by virtue of several difficult registrations it has obtained, (e.g., the color "tan" for tool boxes) and its string of "trademark" successes in court. The firm also has working relationships with various IP law firms worldwide, and has enjoyed stopping knockoffs in foreign markets. The firm is a member of the International Trademark Association ("INTA") and is included in the Bar Register of Preeminent Lawyers. Although HOLLAND & BONZAGNI represents clients throughout the country, most of Holland & Bonzagni's clients are located in New England, more specifically in Massachusetts and Connecticut. Situated on the border of Western Massachusetts and Northern Connecticut (CT), near Route I-91 and only 18 miles from Bradley International (Hartford/Springfield) Airport, clients typically find the location of the firm ideal. The firm is also convenient to the United States District Court (federal court) for the District of Massachusetts, located 10 minutes away in Springfield. HOLLAND & BONZAGNI's staff includes two paralegals and two experienced patent and trademark attorneys. They're described below.
In the mid-1970s, Don Holland was a Patent Examiner in "Rotary Pumps and Turbines" at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. From 1981-2005, Don was a member of the Adjunct Faculty at Western New England College School of Law in Springfield, MA. There, he taught IP courses in "Patents and Trade Secrets," "Unfair Trade and Trademark" and "Copyright Law." Don has also co-taught "Intellectual Property" (along with Mary Bonzagni) in the Paralegal Program at BayPath College. In addition, Don has acted as an arbitrator and an Early Neutral Evaluator (a.k.a. mediator) in IP litigation. Don has written a booklet that many nationwide corporations use, entitled "Your Guide to Patents, Trademarks, Copyrights and Trade Secrets." That booklet is in its fifth edition and has received many plaudits. Email: dsh@hblaw.org | vCard Mary R. Bonzagni, a partner of the firm, has been with HOLLAND & BONZAGNI since 1989. Mary is also a member of the Adjunct Faculty at Western New England College School of Law where she has taught "Copyright Law" and "Unfair Trade and Trademark." She has also co-taught "Intellectual Property" (along with Don Holland) in the Paralegal Program at BayPath College. Mary adds a different dimension to the firm - that of an experienced chemist. Her clients include Crane & Co., Inc., Technical Graphics, Inc. and Kanzaki Specialty Papers, Inc. Mary has been involved in obtaining, defending, and licensing patents for a wide variety of inventions, including security thread embedded banknotes and fuel cells.
Mary received her undergraduate degree in 1978 from American International College, where she won several major academic awards. The first half of her senior year was spent at Argonne National Laboratory investigating the principle of controllable correlated electron tunneling. After graduation, Mary worked as an organic chemist before attending and graduating with honors from Western New England College School of Law. Email: mrb@hblaw.org | vCard
